What do you really know about Iraq? Take a quiz and find out.

Given that democracy cannot survive without an educated electorate, how aware are you regarding the number of casualties resulting from the U.S. attack on Iraq?

If you rely on the American "news" media for information, you probably don't have a clue. That's because the government does not provide much information, and the news media relies on the government as their primary source. Investigative journalism barely exists and, what is often presented as news is actually commentary or merely the reading of a press release.

If you are an American taxpayer, you are directly funding this war and the killing. Before voting in November, shouldn't you, as a responsible citizen, be aware of what the present government is doing in your name?

This site presents an idea of what our invasion has wrought as of the end of October 2004. The numbers are as accurate as can be found and are from sources such and the Pentagon and British military. and, when less certain, are usually estimated low. The true number is likely to be more than presented here and is increasing by dozens on most days.

Please take this quiz below or, if you prefer, go directly to a graphic representation of casualties.

Simply place your cursor over each answer to see if you are correct. All answers are based on information available in early October, 2004.

Old browsers such as Explorer 5 are defective and the dynamic quiz will not work. The great new and free browsers such as Mozilla, Firefox, Safari, and the newer Netscape work fine as does the new Explorer.

  1. How many people have died in Iraq from war related incidents since Bush had the United States invade Iraq?
    1. 1,000 Way way way off. Over 100 people have died in a single day during the war. You probably only get your news from American TV, radio, and newpapers. Over 1000 Americans soldiers have died in Iraq, but there are civilian and soldiers from Iraq and around the world who have been killed.
    2. 10,000 Nope. Too low
    3. 20,000 Too low.
    4. 30,000 Too low.
    5. More than 50,000 This is correct. A recent report by Johns Hopkins researchers and published in the medical journal, The Lancet, has found that it is likely that about 100,000 civilians have died. At the very least many tens of thousands of people have died.
  2. Approximately what percentage of the U.S. troops sent to Iraq have been killed, wounded, or medically evacuated?
    1. .1% No.
    2. .5% Try Again.
    3. 1% Nope. Too low
    4. 5% Too low.
    5. 10% Correct. As far as we can tell, between 200,000-300,000 troops have been sent to Iraq. Around 30,000 have been killed, wounded, or become so ill that they've required evacuation to the U.S. or another country.
  3. Out of the 135,000 American soldier that first went into Iraq what percentage had no body armor?
    1. 1% We only wish this was correct.
    2. 10% No.
    3. 20% Nope.
    4. 30% Correct. About 40,000 troops or nearly 1 in 3 lacked body armor. National Guardsmen in particular usually had Vietnam era flack jackets that provide almost no protection. Rather than wear them, troops often put them in the doors of their decades old unarmed vehicles.
    5. 40% Incorrect.
  4. Which group has suffered the greatest casualties from the Iraq Invasion?
    1. U.S. Soldiers No. Although their number are huge, they are probably in 3rd or 2nd place.
    2. UK Soldiers They only account for about 5% of the fatalities and unknown casualties.
    3. Other Coalition Forces Nope. They have similar numbers to the British.
    4. Iraqi Soldiers Unknown, but they are probably the second greatest group.
    5. Iraqi Civilians Correct. Despite using "smart weapons" the "collateral damage" of innocent civilian deaths and injuries is by far the greatest group of the invasion.- Joint operations by U.S. and its partners are killing twice as many Iraqis, mostly civilian, as attacks by insurgents, according to statistics compiled by the Iraqi Health Ministry.

  6. How many body armor vests could have been purchased for the cost of the "Mission accomplished" press event?
    1. 100 No, Air Force One and its entourage of planes and vehicles costs over $100,000 an hour to fly.
    2. 500 Still low. Other cabinet members came on separate flights.
    3. 750 Incorrect. You've got to add in the cost of keeping the aircraft carrier at sea for an extra day.
    4. 1000 Maybe. Body armor vests cost from around $650 to over $1000.
    5. over 2000 Most likely. Estimates put the cost of the landing at $1 million to over $3 million.
  7. How many attacks per day occurred on American soldiers in Iraq in August 2004?
    1. 1 You've got to be kidding
    2. 5 Way off.
    3. 20 Nope. Too low
    4. 50 Too low.
    5. 100 Yup. Actually the number is over 100 ATTACKS PER DAY for a total of over 3,000 in August alone! This represents a severalfold increase over the rate of a year ago.
  8. Which of the following have publicly stated that Iraq and Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11.
    1. George W. Bush Yes, and there are more right answers. Less than six months after invading Iraq, he stated In front of Congress: "We have no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with the 11 September attacks.".
    2. The 9/11 Commission Right. Their report shows no connection. It also shows that Al Qaeda and Iraq essentially no connection at all. They talked a few times, that's all. It seems that they had much less relation with Iraq than Halliburton in the 90s or Reagan and the first Bush administration. In fact, even after the Saddam was thought to have gassed the Kurds, a resolution urging sanctions against Iraq was passed by both Houses of Congress. It was vetoed by President Bush. The White House even granted Baghdad a further loan of a billion dollars and helped stop a UN resolution condemning Iraq.."
    3. Donald Rumsfeld Yes. Just a month before the 2004 election, he stated: "To my knowledge, I have not seen any strong, hard evidence that links the two [Iraq and Al Qaeda],"
    4. Colin Powell Yes, again. "But I have seen nothing that makes a direct connection between Saddam Hussein and that awful regime, and what happened on 9/11."
    5. Dick Cheney Nope. But Dick Cheney himself had business connections with at least 3 terrorist nations. As CEO of Halliburton, he did illegal (or barely skirted the law) business with Iraq, Iran, and Libya. Cheney and Halliburton are being investigated by the U.S. Justice Department, Securities and Exchange Commission and other countries regarding an alleged $180 million bribe Halliburton paid to Nigeria.
  9. Mr. Bush repeatedly states that everybody thought that Saddam was a danger? That is simply not true. Which TWO senior member of Bush's cabinet stated publicly that Saddam was not a threat?
    1. George W. Bush Nope. BUT he did publicly state the Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11.
    2. Condoleeza Rice Right. She stated on CNN: "But in terms of Saddam Hussein being there, let's remember that his country is divided, in effect. He does not control the northern part of his country. We are able to keep arms from him. His military forces have not been rebuilt."
    3. Donald Rumsfeld Nope.
    4. Colin Powell Yesiree. While acting as Bush's Secretary of State, Powell is on the public record stating: "And frankly they [sanctions] have worked. He has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors. So in effect, our policies [sanctions] have strengthened the security of the neighbors of Iraq..."
  10. This is a list of 51 key Republican leaders in the Bush administration and Congress as well as other prominent Hawks and public figures. Most are ardent supporters of the Iraq Invasion. How many of them actually served in the military? And, how many actually have been in combat so that they can understand what our soldiers are going through?

George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, John Ashcroft, Karl Rove, Jeb Bush, Condoleeza Rice, Dennis Hastert, Tom Delay, Roy Blunt, Bill Frist, Mitch McConnell, Rick Santorum, Trent Lott, Saxby Chambliss, Paul Wolfowitz, Vin Weber, Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, Eliot Abrams, Richard Shelby, Tim Hutchison, Christopher Cox, Newt Gingrich, Phil Gramm, John McCain, Dana Rohrabacher, John M. • Show Answer Only 4 out of the 51 served and only 1 was in combat. That was John McCain. Cheney had 5 draft deferments and Ashcroft had 7 in order to teach business. Bush was in the guard and did not finish, got suspended from flying and resigned early when he wrote a letter (only recently revealed by the White House) saying, "Inadequate time to fullfill (sic) possible future commitments." because he couldn't serve a mere weekend a month. Compare this to the National Guard and Reservists that are being held well beyond their normal commitment because of the Iraq war.
  11. Did the capture of Saddam Hussein have any effect on the casualty rate?
    1. Yes, it went down.Incorrect.
    2. Yes, it went up.No.The rate has generally been higher, and most of the fatalities have occurred after his capture, but there does not appear to be a correlation.
    3. No, it had no effect.Correct. It appears to have had no effect at all. Many of the months with the greated number of casualties have occurred after his capture, but the rate changes.
  12. Since the Bush Administration gave "sovereignty" to an unelected government has the the casualty rate changed?
    1. Yes, it went down.Incorrect.
    2. Yes, it went up.Yes, the rate has gone up. Each and every month of the last six months has had a higher casualties than ANY month preceding them. In fact, compared to the peak of the invasion, the number of casualties in one month were over 3 times as much, while the average month is more than double. The fatality rate is up over 20% from the previous year and nearly 1,000 American soldiers were killed or wounded in August of 2004 alone.
    3. No, there was no change.Wrong.
  13. What percentage of U.S. soldier deaths in Iraq have occurred since Bush challenged opponents to "Bring it on" on July 2, 2003?
    1. 42% Incorrect.
    2. 54% No.
    3. 63% Nope.
    4. 70% Incorrect.
    5. 75% Yup. ALL of the months with the greatest number of fatalities have been in the past year and the second greatest number of fatalities just happened.
  14. What is the second largest foreign army in Iraq?
    • Show Answer Mercenaries and private guards. In fact, the U.S. government, rather than trust its own soldiers hired private soldiers to quard officials such as Paul Bremer. They are paid several times the normal miltary salary and account for a large part of the burden on the U.S. taxpayer.
  15. There are basically two kinds of power - hard and soft. Hard power is done through force and coercion where someone is forced to do your bidding. Soft power is the power of attraction where someone comes over to your side because they are attracted to it. Historically, soft power is most successful as it is the only method that changes the hearts and mind of the other party. Hard power tends to create more enemies. The Bush administration uses hard power. Can you name even a single way in which Bush uses soft power?

Consider this, after 911 the world was with America. There were even massive demonstrations in Iran in support of America, and the French newspaper, Le Monde, said, "We are all Americans". In Afghanistan we had about 40 typical coalition partners, including the French and Germans. With the invasion of Iraq, the 30 countries in the "Coalition of the Willing" included many tiny countries, some of which did not even have armies. Now, nearly a third of that coalition have dropped out. Even Poland, which was mentioned as a partner by Bush in the debates, just announced that it was "misled" and will be leaving Iraq early.

Presently, numerous polls show that the vast majority of the citizens in countries that have been our great allies now oppose the Bush administration. Over 80% of the populace in normally friendly countries including coalition partners, oppose our present actions. Even our close neighbors, Canada and Mexico, have strained relations with us and their citizens overwhelmingly oppose the Bush administration.

Given the fact that Bush is severely alienating even our best friends, how then, can we win over our enemies? Please take a moment and visualize an actual end to the war on terror. If we only use hard power as Bush is doing, will it ever end? Will we not only create more enemies?

  16. Dick Cheney had basically two jobs assigned to him before 9/11, the terrorism task force and the energy task force. The energy task force met 8 times before 9/11. How many times did he have the terrorism task force meet?
    • Show Answer Zero. Zilch. Nada. Never. However, the fact is, before 9/11 he had plenty of time to meet and divide up Iraqi oil fields (See Cheney's map) with people from companies such as Enron. Why was he dividing up Iraq at this time or ever? Isn'that oil owned by the Iraqi people and not the U.S.? Why did it take a lawsuit by Judicial Watch to get any of the documents out and why is the Bush administration still hiding most of them?
